Each indium atom is octahedral. It can be formed by reacting indium oxide with hydrogen fluoride gas or hydrofluoric acid. Indium (III) fluoride powder can be used to synthesize non-oxide glasses. It catalyzes the addition of trimethylsilyl cyanide (TMSCN) to aldehydes, forming cyanohydrins.
