Pure metal lutetium has been isolated only in recent years and is one of the harder to organize. It is often prepared by the reduction of anhydrous LuCl3 or LuF3 by an alkali or alkaline-earth metal. The metal is silvery-white and comparatively stable in the air. It's the toughest and therefore the densest of the lanthanides.

Lutetium is extremely expensive to get in useful quantities and thus it's only a few commercial uses. One commercial application has been as a pure beta emitter, using lutetium which has been exposed to neutron activation. A small amount of lutetium is added as a dopant to gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG), which is employed in magnetic bubble memory devices.
