  • Hafnium

    Hafnium, symbol Hf, atomic number 72, atomic weight 178.49, belongs to group IVB in the periodic table. Hafnium is a shiny silver-gray transition metal with a density of 13.31g/cm³ (20℃), a melting point of 2233 ℃ (2506 K, 4051 °F), and a boiling point of 4603 °C (4876 K, 8317 °F). The dense metal hafnium is inactive and reacts with air to form an oxide coating. It is stable at room temperature, while powdered hafnium is easy to ignite spontaneously in the air. Hafnium does not react with dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, and strong alkaline solutions, but it is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia. Hafnium is low in the earth's crust and often coexists with zirconium. Hafnium has the properties of high-temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, easy processing, rapid heat absorption, and heat release, and is used as atomic energy materials, alloy materials, high-temperature resistant materials, electronic materials, etc.

Refractory Metals Chemical Properties

The refractory metals have a good sort of chemical properties because they're members of three distinct groups in the periodic tableThey're easily oxidized, but this reaction is bogged down within the bulk metal by the formation of stable oxide layers on the surface. The oxide of rhenium is especially more volatile than the metal, and thus at heat the stabilization against the attack of oxygen is lost, that’s because the oxide layer evaporates. All of them are relatively stable against acids.

Refractory Metals Applications

Refractory metals are utilized as catalysts in lighting, tools, lubricants, natural process control rods for their chemical or electrical properties. Due to their high freezing point, refractory metal components are never fabricated by casting. The method of metallurgy is employed. Powders of the pure metal are compacted, heated using current, and further fabricated by cold working with annealing steps. Refractory metals are often made into wire, ingots, rebars, sheets, or foil.
