Iridium (Ir) is a silver-white metal with a very high density of 22.56 g/cm3, a melting point of 2443 ℃, and a boiling point of 4437 ℃. It has very high corrosion resistance and hardness. It has very high chemical stability and does not react easily in air or most acids. It can react with chlorine at high temperatures to form iridium trichloride (IrCl3). It is part of the platinum group of metals and is widely used in industries that require exceptional durability and oxidation resistance.

Iridium (Ir) Characteristics

  • High density and hardness
  • Extremely high melting point (2410°C), second highest among all metals
  • Excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance
  • High temperature and chemical stability: It can withstand extreme temperatures and chemical environments, including acids and bases.

Iridium (Ir) Applications

  • Chemical Industry: Production of high-performance catalysts, especially in petroleum refining and chemical reactions
  • Electronics Industry: Manufacturing durable contact points, switches, and electronic components
  • Aerospace Industry: Used in engine parts, high-performance igniters, and rocket nozzles
  • Jewelry: Alloyed with platinum to enhance hardness and durability
  • Medicine: Production of radioactive drugs and implants, particularly in cancer treatment
  • Precision Instruments: Used in high-precision tools, such as standard balances and atomic clocks
