Platinum (Pt) Crucible Usage Precautions

  1. The melting point of the platinum crucible is 1773.5°C. Do not use it above 1200°C. Do not heat it directly over an open flame.
  2. When handling the crucible, do not apply too much force. This can cause deformation or dents. Do not use the sharp end of a glass rod to remove substances from the crucible.
  3. Do not heat or melt alkali metal oxides, hydroxides, barium oxide, sodium thiosulfate, phosphorus-containing substances, or materials with a lot of sulfur in the platinum crucible. Alkali metal salts like nitrates, nitrites, oxides, chlorides, and cyanides can form brittle platinum phosphides or platinum sulfides at high temperatures. These will damage the platinum.
  4. Do not heat or burn samples or compounds that contain heavy metals like lead, bismuth, tin, arsenic, silver, mercury, or copper in the platinum crucible.
  5. Do not let the crucible touch other metals when heating at high temperatures (like iron plates or electric furnaces). Be careful not to let it touch electrical parts when putting it in a furnace.
  6. Do not handle halogens (like aqua regia, bromine water, and hydrochloric acid) or oxidizing agents (like chlorates, nitrates, permanganates, manganese dioxide, chromates, or nitrites) in the platinum crucible. Ferric chloride can damage platinum, so avoid contact with it.
  7. Do not heat or dissolve substances with unknown compositions in the platinum crucible.
  8. Keep the platinum crucible clean inside and out. After long heating, the outside may get dull, and dirt can get inside. This can make the crucible brittle and cause it to crack. Clean it regularly to avoid this.
