Rhenium powder is generally used as an element additive for high-temperature alloys, and material coatings, and is further processed into dense rhenium metal products. It is used in the fields of nuclear industry, aerospace high-temperature materials, new superconducting materials, etc.

  • Aerospace: Used in manufacturing high-temperature alloy components for jet engines.
  • High-temperature Alloys: Used as an additive for various high-temperature alloys.
  • Catalysts: Used as catalysts in fields, such as petrochemicals, etc.
  • Electronics Industry: Used in manufacturing special electronic tubes and color imaging tube filaments, high-temperature components, thermocouples, etc.

Characteristics of Rhenium Powder

  • High melting point (about 3,180°C, only lower than tungsten).
  • High boiling point.
  • High strength.
  • Rhenium has excellent creep resistance under rapid cooling and rapid heating conditions. At a high temperature of 2,200°C, the engine nozzle made of rhenium can withstand 100,000 thermal fatigue cycles without failure.
  • Rhenium can maintain good chemical inertness to most fuel gases, so it will not be corroded by hot hydrogen.

Preparation Process of High-Purity Rhenium Powder

  • Hydrogen Reduction Method: This method uses high-purity hydrogen as a reducing agent to reduce ammonium perrhenate or potassium perrhenate to obtain metallic rhenium. Powdered rhenium powder is placed in a reduction furnace and high-purity hydrogen is introduced for reduction for 8 hours to obtain high-purity rhenium powder. The reduction temperature is controlled at 400~600°C.
  • Electrolysis Method: The aqueous solution of perrhenate is electrolyzed to obtain metallic rhenium powder or rhenium coating. The electrolysis method also has the disadvantages of low production efficiency and high power consumption.
  • Vapor Deposition Method: This method is mainly divided into chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD), which involves vaporizing metallic rhenium or rhenium compounds, entering the reaction chamber together with other reaction gases, and finally sending them to the deposition chamber to deposit on the surface of the substrate to generate high-purity metallic rhenium.
