Samarium is a rare earth metal with the atomic number 62 and the symbol Sm, which is used for cancer treatment and as control rod material in nuclear reactors respectively. Samarium (Sm) Metal Applications
- Used in the production of Samarium-Cobalt (Sm2Co17) permanent magnets with one of the highest resistances to demagnetization known.
- Used in making specialty alloy and sputtering targets.
- Used in the control rods of nuclear reactors because Samarium-149 has a high cross-section for neutron capture (41,000 barns).
- Be further processed to various shapes of sheets, wires, foils, slabs, rods, discs, and powder.
