More info

Thorium Fluoride (ThF4) Powder is chemically stable, insoluble in most acids, but soluble in a hot ammonium carbonate solution. Despite its slight radioactivity, it is used as an anti-radiation material in optical coatings and serves as a raw material for the production of metallic thorium through thermal reduction. It is also utilized in the preparation of thorium metal powder through the chloride-fluoride molten salt electrolysis process. When melted with fluoride compounds of alkali metals, beryllium, or zirconium, it can serve as a breeding material in molten salt reactors.
