Lithium Hydride Anhydrous, highly hygroscopic, appears as a white or bluish-gray translucent crystalline or powder. It reacts violently with water to produce lithium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. With oxygen or chlorine at high temperatures, it forms hydroxides or chlorides. With nitrogen, it produces amides, imides, or nitrides. In ether, it reacts with aluminum chloride to form lithium aluminum hydride. Lithium is obtained at the cathode during molten electrolysis, while hydrogen gas is released at the anode.
