What Are Refractory Metals?

Refractory metals are metals and alloys with unique properties such as tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, and rhenium. The unique properties include high melting point, electrical characteristics, high-temperature mechanical properties, etc. They are widely used in electric light sources, electronics, information, electric power, metallurgy, chemical industry, aviation, aerospace, and other sectors. Heeger Materials Inc., a professional supplier and manufacturer of high-quality Precious Metals, leverages extensive expertise in supply and export to offer competitive prices.

Refractory Metals Properties:

Refractory metals have various chemical properties. These metals oxidize easily to form a dense oxide layer and are relatively stable to acids and other substances. Due to the high melting point, refractory metals do not suffer from creep deformation at very high temperatures.

  • High boiling point.
  • All have a cubic crystal structure centered on the body.
  • There is strong resistance to creep

What Are Refractory Metals Used for?

Refractory metals have extremely important applications in grain refinement during the casting of high-temperature alloy steels, structural steel carbides, nonferrous carbides, and commonly used nonferrous metals such as aluminum and copper, based on their basic properties of high melting points. They also have important applications in developing new materials such as semiconductor materials, magnetic materials, superconducting materials, wear-resistant materials, and high-specific gravity alloys.

Medical devices:  Some refractory metals, such as tantalum and rhenium, are used in artificial joints, implantable devices, etc. Rhodium and iridium, for example, are used in pacemakers and radiotherapy equipment.
Industrial fields: For example, tungsten and molybdenum are used to make high-temperature furnaces and electrodes. Platinum and iridium are used to make high-end jewelry and accessories.
Aerospace industry: Refractory metals are often used to make aircraft engine parts. For example, the parts in a rocket engine need to withstand extremely high temperatures and pressures. At this time, ordinary metals will not work.

Refractory Metals VS Alloys:

Alloys are stronger and more resistant to high temperatures than refractory metals themselves and are more widely used.
For example, tungsten alloys usually include tungsten and other metals: such as nickel or iron. They have higher strength and high melting points and are often used to make high-temperature smelting furnaces.
Tantalum alloys: tantalum + other metals, such as niobium or titanium. Tantalum alloys have good corrosion resistance and are often used to make chemical valves and pumps for conveying corrosive gases or liquids.
