Gadolinium(III) nitrate is an inorganic compound of gadolinium. It is used as a water-soluble neutron poison in nuclear reactors. Gadolinium nitrate, like all nitrates, is an oxidizing agent. HM stocks a wide variety of rare earth materials for use in electronics, petrochemical, metallurgy, machinery, energy, environmental protection, agriculture, and other fields. We also offer pure metals and compounds for R&D applications.

Gadolinium Nitrate is used for making optical glass and dopant for Gadolinium Yttrium Garnets which have microwave applications, also applied in special catalysts and phosphors. Gadolinium Nitrate is also used for making green phosphors for color TV tubes. It is used in many quality assurance applications, such as line sources and calibration phantoms. It is used for making Gadolinium Yttrium Garnet (Gd: Y3Al5O12); it has microwave applications and is used in the fabrication of various optical components and as substrate material for magneto-optical films. Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG, Gd3Ga5O12) was used for imitation diamonds and for computer bubble memory. It can also serve as an electrolyte in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs).

Application

  • Gadolinium nitrate was used at the Savannah River Site in heavy water nuclear reactors and has to be separated from the heavy water for storage or reuse. The Canadian CANDU reactor, a pressurized heavy water reactor, also uses gadolinium nitrate as a water-soluble neutron poison in heavy water.
  • Gadolinium nitrate is also used as a raw material in the production of other gadolinium compounds, for the production of specialty glasses and ceramics, and as a phosphor.
