Tungsten electrodes are made by pressing and molding tungsten powder through powder metallurgy techniques and then sintering and machining it into an electrode. When adding trace rare earth elements with lower emission work function, such as thorium (Th), cerium (Ce), or their oxides, such as thorium oxide (ThO2), cerium oxide (CeO2), etc., it can significantly improve electronic emission capability. The manufactured electrodes are marked with different colors to facilitate the identification and selection of the right type of electrode for a particular welding application.
