Barium Borate (BBO) Crystal has a broad transmission range from 188 nm to 5.2 μm, with optimal performance between 3 μm and 5.2 μm. Even at thicknesses of several tens of micrometers, it maintains excellent transmission and phase matching. BBO is widely used in nonlinear applications, such as harmonic generation, frequency doubling for Nd-doped lasers, Ti: sapphire laser tripling, and tunable OPOs. It is recognized for having the highest nonlinear optical performance among UV nonlinear crystals.

BBO is a negative uniaxial crystal, meaning its ordinary refractive index (no) is greater than its extraordinary refractive index (ne). By angle tuning, both Type I and Type II phase matching can be achieved. The SHG (Second Harmonic Generation) phase matching is shown in the figure below:
