Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrode Properties

Chemical Properties

Stability at High Temperatures

Stable in air and water at room temperature. Oxidizes mildly at 400°C and vigorously at 600°C to form MoO3. Remains stable in oxygen atmospheres between 1500–1700°C.

Corrosion Resistance

Insoluble in hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, dilute nitric acid, and alkaline solutions.

Solubility

Soluble in nitric acid, aqua regia, or hot sulfuric acid solutions.

Reactivity with Hydrogen

It does not react with hydrogen at high temperatures but forms molybdenum nitrides at 1500°C.

Reactivity with Carbon

Reacts with carbon, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons above 1100–1200°C to form carbides such as MoSi2.

 Physical Properties

Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrode Production Process

  1. Ammonium molybdate is roasted to produce molybdenum trioxide (MoO₃).
  2. Molybdenum trioxide is reduced by hydrogen at high temperatures to yield molybdenum powder.
  3. The molybdenum powder is sealed in an oil-resistant rubber mold and formed into a dense sintered billet under 200–300 MPa pressure using a Ø820×1600mm isostatic press.
  4. The billet is sintered to near-dense molybdenum under hydrogen protection in a medium-frequency induction furnace at high temperatures.
  5. The sintered billet is hot- and warm-forged under hydrogen protection to produce a molybdenum electrode blank.
  6. Finally, the electrode blank is machined into a finished molybdenum electrode

Advantages of Coated Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrodes

Molybdenum Glass Melting Electrodes with oxidation-resistant coatings offer the following benefits:

  1. They overcome oxidation issues, significantly extending the electrode's lifespan.
  2. Coated molybdenum electrodes can be installed without additional oxidation protection, streamlining the installation process.
  3. The thick, high-strength coating improves corrosion resistance, further prolonging the electrode's service life.
  4. The coating prevents oxidation even when the electrode is exposed to air due to large temperature fluctuations in the glass feeding channel.

Molybdenum Zirconia Oxide Glass Melting Electrodes

The MoZrO2 Molybdenum Electrode is a type of molybdenum electrode doped with zirconium oxide. Compared to pure molybdenum electrodes, this new electrode retains the high-temperature performance, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity of pure molybdenum, while significantly improving corrosion resistance. It demonstrates excellent resistance to corrosion and outstanding high-temperature strength when used in molten glass. As a result, this advanced molybdenum electrode is increasingly being used in the production of various types of glass.
