Scandium Nitride Powder Production Process

Scandium Nitride (ScN) Powder's synthesis methods:

  • Sc, Sc4C3, and ScH3 reacts with N2 under nitrogen atmosphere by heat to form ScN;

              2Sc+N2→2ScN (at 800-900℃ temperature)

             2ScH3+N2→2ScN+3H2 (at 800-900℃ temperature)

             Sc4C3+2N2→4ScN+3C (at 1200℃ temperature)

  • Reduction of scandium oxide with carbon in a nitrogen atmosphere;

             Sc2O3+C+N2→2ScN+3CO (at 1300℃ temperature)

  • Scandium metal and nitrogen are used as raw materials in a DC arc plasma discharge device. The metal scandium powder is pressed into a block, placed in a graphite crucible, and put into the copper pot anode in the reaction chamber of the DC arc plasma discharge device, and circulating cooling water is passed into the copper pot anode, tungsten rod cathode, and the condensation wall; the reaction chamber is evacuated until the air pressure is lower than 1Pa, and nitrogen is charged until the pressure is 10-40kPa to start the discharge; the arc current is adjusted to 100-120A when the arc is induced, and the arc is kept stable. Adjust the arc current to 100-120A, keep the voltage at 15-25V, the length of the positive arc column area is 0.5-1cm, cut off the power after 5-15min discharge; fill the argon gas to the internal pressure of 30-60kPa, passivate the product for 4-6h; and keep the circulating cooling water continuously circulating for 1h after the reaction; open the vacuum chamber after the passivation is completed and collect the powder.

Scandium Nitride Powder Applications

  • Raw material for phosphors
  • Additives in special alloys and non-ferrous metals
  • Epitaxial films of metals with high refractive index
  • Wear-resistant materials, encapsulation, and protection materials
  • The manufacture of magnetic semiconductor materials
  • Widely used in the electronics industry, also used in electric light sources, spectral analysis, etc.
